What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works on the customer's problem, in the customer's environment — translating ambiguous business reality into shipped product.

Origins at Palantir

Palantir coined the FDE role in the mid-2000s. Engineers were sent on-site to intelligence agencies and large enterprises, working alongside analysts to make the software actually useful for the mission.

Today at AI-native companies

OpenAI, Anthropic and a wave of applied-AI startups now hire FDEs to bridge model capability and production reality. Half engineer, half consultant, half product manager — they own outcomes, not tickets.

What good looks like

  • Comfortable in unfamiliar codebases on day one.
  • Strong written communication; updates without prompting.
  • Bias to shipping the smallest thing that proves the point.
  • Equally credible to engineering leadership and to non-technical buyers.
