What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with a customer to design, build, and ship software inside the customer’s real operating environment — not from behind a product roadmap.
In one sentence
FDEs sit between the product and the customer: they own real engineering work (code, integrations, data pipelines, AI deployments), but they do it on-site or embedded with a specific account.
What FDEs actually do
- Discover. Map the customer’s workflows, data, and constraints.
- Design & build. Write production code, prototypes, and integrations against the customer’s stack.
- Deploy. Get the solution live in the customer’s environment (cloud, on-prem, or hybrid).
- Stabilize & hand off. Operate it long enough to prove value, then transition ownership or feed learnings back to the core product team.
The 4 types of FDE roles
- AI FDE. Deploys LLM and ML systems into enterprise workflows (RAG, agents, evals, fine-tuning).
- Platform FDE. Builds integrations, data pipelines, and infra glue on top of a core platform.
- Product FDE. Ships customer-specific features that later inform the main product roadmap.
- Implementation FDE. Configures and rolls out an existing product — closer to solutions/implementation work than core engineering.
How FDEs differ from similar roles
- vs. Software Engineer. Same coding bar, but FDEs optimize for one customer at a time and ship in their environment.
- vs. Solutions Engineer. SEs support sales and demos; FDEs own delivery and write production code.
- vs. Implementation / Professional Services. PS configures; FDEs build new software when the product doesn’t cover the gap.
Core skills
- Strong general-purpose coding (Python and/or TypeScript, plus cloud).
- Applied AI/ML for AI FDE roles — LLMs, RAG, evals, agents.
- Comfort with ambiguity, customer conversations, and scope-setting.
- Operational chops: deployment, observability, on-call ownership.
2026 US salary range
Typical total comp for FDE roles in the US sits around $127k–$155k base, with senior and AI-focused FDEs at top labs reaching $250k+ total compensation. Contract day-rates commonly fall between $900–$1,800/day.
How to evaluate an FDE job
Quick checks before saying yes:
- Green flags: you’ll write production code, own deployment, work with a named engineering manager, and have clear success metrics.
- Red flags: “FDE” that’s really tier-2 support, no code in the interview, no environment access, or pure pre-sales demos.
TL;DR
A Forward Deployed Engineer is a real engineer who ships software inside the customer’s world. The title spans four flavors (AI, Platform, Product, Implementation) — always ask which one the role actually is before joining.
